🏆 Witney Town FC: Champions & Moving Up

On 23 April 2025, a 4–3 win at East Oxford F.C. clinched the Oxfordshire Senior League Division 2 title for Witney Town — their first championship at any level since 1978. With it came promotion to Division 1 of the Senior League, where the club now competes for the 2025–26 season.

Earlier in the same season, on 18 January 2025, Witney Town also reached the Oxfordshire Charity Cup final, beating KEA 4–0 away in the semi-final.

Witney Town play their home games at the Witney Artificial Pitch on Gordon Way, named unofficially in 2025 as the Witney Community Stadium.

🤝 Town Council & Witney Town FC: A New Partnership

A major off-pitch development has seen Witney Town Council formally align with the club. The partnership is described as "a big step forward," with the collaboration expected to bring lasting benefits for everyone in Witney — from grassroots development to wider community initiatives.

Councillor Ruth Smith, Leader of the Council, noted that the club has "a heart to help existing youth teams form a pipeline to the adult game and to expand women's football," adding that their work to improve mental health understanding "is becoming a lifeline in the community."

Witney Town FC's charity partner is Tough To Talk, which supports men's mental health.

🏗️ New 3G Pitch Coming to West Witney Sports Ground

This is huge news for grassroots football in the area. West Oxfordshire District Council has allocated over £1 million of Section 106 funding for a new third-generation (3G) football pitch at West Witney Sports Ground, to ensure grassroots football continues to grow.

The pitch funding will be transferred to Witney Town Council, who will oversee the design, planning, build and long-term operation and maintenance of the facility.

Executive Member for Leisure Councillor Tim Sumner said the 3G pitch "will allow more playing time than a traditional pitch due to the materials used," with the possibility of sports lighting for year-round, all-weather use.

The total estimated cost for a full-size adult 11v11 3G pitch with sports lighting is approximately £1,200,000 (based on Sport England's Q3 2024 facility costs), meaning additional funding is still being sought.

🛡️ Witney Vikings Youth FC: 50 Years Strong & Racking Up Trophies

Witney Vikings Youth Football Club — the largest youth football club in the Witney area — celebrated a massive milestone this year. 2025 marked the club's 50th Anniversary, with celebrations held over the weekend of 12th–13th July at Wood Green School.

The club, established in 1975, now has over 40 teams and is run entirely by volunteers — all coaches holding FA Level 1 qualifications or above, with DBS checks, and all committed to the club's ethos of fun, positivity and player development.

🌍 Inclusive Football Sessions

Vikings are expanding access to the game. Building on the success of their FA Comets sessions, and working together with Springfield School and Oxfordshire FA, Vikings are launching new Inclusive 12+ Football Sessions.

💰 Fundraising Heroes

The U12 Youth team alone has raised over £6,000 for Prostate UK, Oxford Hospital Charity and African Children's Charity.

📜 Rule Changes: What Coaches & Parents Need to Know

🚫 Heading Rules — Now Extended to U10s (2025–26)

The FA has introduced a new rule to phase out deliberate heading in matches across all affiliated grassroots youth football from U7 to U11 level, rolled out over three seasons — starting with U7–U9 from 2024–25, extending to U10 from 2025–26, and U11 from 2026–27. This applies to all leagues, clubs and affiliated school matches.

🤝 Captains Only Protocol — New for 2025–26

From the 2025–26 season, a Captains Only protocol has been introduced across all levels of English football — only the team captain may approach a match official to discuss a decision. A 'captain-only zone' extends four metres around the referee. This is part of the FA's Love Football. Protect The Game campaign.

🔮 Coming in 2026–27: FutureFit — Big Format Changes Ahead

From the start of the 2026–27 season, the FA is launching FutureFit — a new progressive framework for grassroots youth football, including new 3v3, 5v5 and 7v7 playing formats.

The aim is to give players more touches of the ball, more time on the pitch and increased physical activity — with smaller formats better matching players' developmental stages.
